Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) system _ Freestyle Libre2 usage and precautions

Hello, this is Ilwon Station Exit 1 Pharmacy.

Freestyle Libre 2 has been officially sold in South Korea since June 2024. You can purchase it at Ilwon Station Exit 1 Pharmacy.

Before looking into the Freestyle Libre2 product, let's take a brief look at the continuous glucose monitoring system.

What is a bloodless continuous glucose monitoring system (CGM)?

It refers to a continuous glucose monitoring system consisting of a transmitter (transmitter, continuous glucose monitoring system), electrode (sensor), and receiver (compatible mobile phone or dedicated receiver).

In the past, blood was drawn from the fingertips every time to check blood sugar levels. However, because it was inconvenient and had the risk of infection, a bloodless continuous glucose monitoring system is a simpler and more convenient device for measuring blood sugar levels.

A bloodless continuous glucose monitoring system is a device that attaches a small blood sugar measurement sensor to the skin to measure blood sugar levels in real time and continuously monitor blood sugar levels.

Representative continuous glucose monitoring products include Abbott's FreeStyle Libre, iSens' CareSens Air, and Dexcom's Dexcom G6.

The pharmacy at Exit 1 of Ilwon Station only sells Abbott's Freestyle Libre 2 product.

Let's check out the differences between Freestyle Libre 1 and Freestyle Libre 2.

The big difference is that the existing Freestyle Libre 1 requires the phone to touch (scan) the sensor to check blood sugar levels.

However, the Freestyle Libre 2 automatically transmits blood sugar levels to the phone via Bluetooth.

The Freestyle Libre 1 often had low blood sugar levels for the first 1-2 days as the sensor stabilized. The Freestyle Libre 2 has less of a tendency to have low blood sugar levels at the beginning.

The phone's battery may drain faster than usual.

Basically, when you connect a Bluetooth device to your smartphone, the smartphone's battery may drain faster. However, the latest Bluetooth version (Bluetooth 4.0 or later) is optimized for data transmission, so battery efficiency has improved.

The Freestyle Libre 2 is a Bluetooth version after 4.0, so you can think of the battery consumption as the same as using Bluetooth earphones.

※ Bluetooth is stably connected when the device and mobile phone are within 10m.
If the mobile phone and Freestyle Libre2 sensor are too far apart or the app itself is closed, the connection may be lost.
However, if the sensor and mobile phone are close within 8 hours or the Libre app is restarted, blood sugar data will not be lost. ※
